It was another rainy day but we decided to go ahead with our plans to see the city and it's attractions. We started by going to Oliver Cromwell's house as seen above. After an inheritance from his uncle, he moved to Ely, became an MP and the rest is history. As you can see Tom quite fancies himself in the role.
From there we went to see the Stained Glass Museum, which is in Ely Cathedral. There was a class of infants there and I tagged along - it was really informative!!! It was well worth a visit and spectacular to see all the windows together.
Our next trip was up the Lantern Tower of the Cathedral - luckily the guide didn't point out how high and narrow the climb was, or I might not have embarked on it. However there was no going back once you had started and the views both inside and out, were well worth the fear experienced.
We then walked around the cathedral under our own steam, having picked up a lot of the history on the previous tour. By this time we were flagging a bit, so it was back to the boat for an hour before setting out again in the pouring rain, for the evening tour of the city by foot.
Needless to say we were the only two fools who turned up and the guide seemed a bit surprised to see us. However we spent the next one and a half hours getting soaked while he took us to see all the points of interest and I think we all enjoyed it.
Altogether a really busy but fantastic day and we are now experts on the city of Ely! It was probably the wettest day so far as it didn't stop raining all day or evening and we were truly drenched but it didn't spoil our fun.
